Tips for Junk Journaling Beginners

Filed under: Uncategorized — Kristine Richards @ 10:39 am

Did you know that the scrapbooking trend started in the 19th century? Back then, scrapbooking consisted of collecting and recording information about a family or individual in a decorative album. Scrapbooking is still around, but it has greatly evolved over two centuries, and in the mid-2000s Junk Journaling gained popularity.  Check out PaperDirect’s junk journaling page for even more ideas!

What is “junk journaling?” The definition can vary, but the essence of it is to collect and record memories, thoughts, ideas, and inspiration using found and recycled materials (e.g., old books, papers, maps, sheet music, etc.) into a handmade book. Since no two junk journals are the same, the purpose of a junk journal can also vary. These are just a few examples of the different purposes:

Use “recycled” graduation programs for your junk journal pages!

Types of Junk Journals

  • Everyday Journal — this is a scrapbook version of a diary; it tells the story of your day using materials and quick notes instead of long paragraphs
  • Planner — a unique, more creative way to stay organized than “dry” spiral-bound planners
  • Memory Book — a more tangible and visual way to remember a special event instead of paraphernalia tucked away in a box
  • Personalized Gift — use the junk journal as a gift idea for the holidays, graduations, weddings, and/or anniversaries
  • Theme Book — use an overall theme to bring your junk journal to life; popular themes are flowers and vintage
  • Art Journal — this is a fun way to present your own artwork and bring lots of mixed media together

Use the different layers of old invites for your journal!

If you’re a creative and/or crafty person, or just like the idea of junk journaling, we can help you get started! Use the following steps and ideas to draw inspiration from and create your first junk journal.

1. Choose a subject or purpose.

Create a junk journal for yourself using any of the above ideas or create one as a gift for a friend or relative. The subject (aka theme) can be very general (flowers, food) or be more specific, like modeling it after your favorite book (e.g., Alice in Wonderland, Twilight).

smorgasbord food theme border papers

2. Choose a book binding method.

Bindings can range from basic (three-ring binders, notebooks, hardcover journals) to handmade (fabrics,  cereal boxes, thread or yarn).

3. Collect tools, supplies, and materials.

Tools include hole punchers, scissors, glue sticks, tape, ink stamps, and other “hardware.” Materials for the inside can vary widely depending on your own style, but some ideas are: paper ephemera, ribbons, laces, flat charms, photos, tabs, paperclips, bookmarks, playing cards, etc. Paper “ephemera” can be themed stationery papers, ticket stubs, postcards, envelopes, wrapping paper, printed quotes, magazine clippings, brochures, maps, et al. NOTE: If you find yourself really liking junk journaling, you may want to invest in some storage containers or bins to organize your tools and materials.

4. Assemble and prepare the base.

If you chose a three-ring binder or notebook, this step may not apply to you, although you can certainly embellish those to make them more personable. Handmade bindings involve gathering materials, like a cereal box, yarn, and fabrics, to create the cover for your inside pages.

5. Fill your junk journal.

This is the fun part, where your style and your voice come to life on the pages. Arrange your materials however you like, whether it’s in layers, collages, or grids. For more in-depth ideas and instruction, there is a wealth of articles, blogs, and videos on the internet to help you. One of our favorite articles is here.

If you’ve read this far, you know that the bulleted lists above are mostly informative and referential. When it comes to junk journaling, please note that there are NO rules! Every junk journal is unique to the creater and/or recipient. The most important thing when it comes junk journaling is to have fun.

Rewarding Employees in Creative, Inexpensive Ways

You Make A Difference Specialty Certificates

If you need ideas for rewarding employees without spending a great deal of money, you have come to the right place. Sure, you can take the easy way out and shoot off an email telling your employee he/she has done a great job, but there are more creative, personal, and meaningful ways to convey to your team that they are doing a fantastic job and that you appreciate their hard work.

Raises and bonuses are usually the most appreciated way of rewarding employee performance, dedication, and creativity, but company budgets don’t always allow for this type of recognition. Tell your employees you appreciate their great work with these creative, inexpensive means of employee recognition.

Praise is free, meaningful, personal. If you’re looking for a more tangible way to recognize a job well done, there are creative ways of rewarding employees.

Certificates, plaques, trophies, banners, gifts, and inspirational posters are all creative, inexpensive ways of rewarding employees who have wowed you with their customer service, product pitch, sales record, perfect attendance, or team work.

Never underestimate the power of recognition. It boosts morale, motivates, inspires, creates feelings of self-worth and value, increases productivity, and fosters loyalty and dedication.

If you haven’t told your employees they’re doing a good job, they may have low morale, lack motivation, or do just enough to get the job done. While employees may appear to not need a pat on the back, everyone truly likes to hear they’re doing a good job every now and then. And with so many creative, inexpensive ways of rewarding employees, there’s no reason to put this off any longer.

12 Company Picnic Themes

Company Picnic Themes & Ideas

If you need another excuse to blow off a Friday and spoil your staff, this is it! Host a company picnic to recognize your top employees and thank the entire crew for their hard work throughout the past year. And you know, a party isn’t a party unless it has a theme. Here are 12 unique company picnic themes and ideas that will make your celebration a blast.

grill master border papers for barbecues

The Classic Cookout

One of our favorite company picnic themes is the all-American BBQ. Fire up the grills, cook some hot dogs and hamburgers, and keep the event simple. Host the cookout on the lawn out back or at a nearby park. Or, go classic tailgating style and deck out the parking lot for a party.

Watermelon Eating Contest

Why not focus your company picnic around a ridiculous event, like a watermelon eating contest? You get to see who’s a competitive eater at heart and cheer on your co-workers. Bonus: Host a watermelon seed spitting contest for those with smaller appetites.

Country Dress Up

Encourage everyone to channel their inner cowgirls and cowboys for a western theme picnic. Bib overall, boots, flannel, and jeans are required attire at the casual Friday gathering.

Red, White, and Blue

Are you planning a company recognition party in July? Pair it up with Independence Day so you can flaunt the stars and stripes. Tell everyone to don red, white, and blue so you can look fabulous in a company team photo. Don’t forget the sparklers!

The Fourth Border Papers for patriotic events

Chili Cookoff

Bring on a challenge! Inspire your staff to break into small teams and dig into their spice racks. Host a chili cookoff to pass a Friday afternoon. Require each team to assemble their chili in a slower cooker at the start of the day so you get to smell the entries cooking until it’s time for the afternoon picnic.

Ants in Your Pants

If the weather is unpredictable, convert the boardroom into picnic central. Red and white check tablecloths and plastic ants will transform the space into a park setting instantly. Supply a few kid’s games like Ants in Your Pants, Checkers or Jacks to play during lunch.

Potluck Party

Does your staff love bringing treats to work? Let them show off their culinary skills with a potluck picnic. Have each employee draw a card from a hat letting them know what to bring: salad, dessert, fruit, or entree.

Halloween Revival

Why wait until October to wear a goofy costume to work? Encourage your employees to raid their closets for past Halloween costumes and flaunt them at the picnic. If families are invited to the company event, encourage kids and spouses to dress up too.

The Royal Court

When it’s time to name the king and queen of the office, go royal. Prepare paper crowns for the top employees and treat everyone like royalty by putting on a medieval spread complete with giant grilled turkey legs and flutes filled with grape juice (or wine)!

Throwback Picnic

Pick an era and encourage everyone to dress the part. Neon clothes and big hair are perfect for a 1990s party. Or, get groovy by wearing bellbottoms and peace symbols for a 1960s theme.

Family Fun Day

Invite the employees and their families to the recognition picnic. Host the event at a park that allows pets, and encourage four-legged family members to attend. Kick off the day with a best tail wag and pet costume contest to break the ice!

Playtime Theme

Take a company field trip to the local roller rink, bowling alley, or climbing wall. Let the staff channel their inner kids with some playtime antics before the picnic lunch and announcements.

How to Write an Employee Recognition Letter for Outstanding Customer Service

Filed under: Employee Recognition Ideas — Megan Duffy @ 12:00 am
employee recognition letter for customer service

When an employee gives impeccable customer service, celebrate it. Providing words of thanks and feedback to the employee not only boosts their confidence and shows your gratitude, but it also confirms they are adhering to the ideals and goals of the company. In moments like this, the employee’s supervisor should consider writing an employee recognition letter for customer service.

Not sure where to start? We’re pros at positive communication exchanges and know how to recognize a job well done. Let’s start writing.

Preparing Your Employee Recognition/Customer Service Letter

As you sit down to handwrite a beautiful card or type up a letter on company stationery (both are perfectly acceptable!), you’ll want to focus on three things:

  • Summarizing the admirable customer service moment
  • Why it was a notable exchange with a customer
  • Gratitude for the employee’s performance

The purpose of writing this letter to a stand-out staff member is to show how much their attentiveness is appreciated and noticed by customers and senior-level employees at the company.

Sample Letter to Celebrate an Employee

Here’s an example that you can customize to fit your profession, situation, and/or company structure to celebrate an employee’s interaction with a customer or a general trend of excellent service over time.

Dear Employee Name,

Here at Acme Health Supplies Inc., we strive to celebrate greatness when we see it, and this week you’re in the spotlight! We received a phone call from Mrs. Smith regarding your exchange on Friday to set up her new home delivery service. She was thrilled with your helpful tips, attention to detail, and complimented your courteous tone. This moment of stellar customer service was also noticed in the office by a few of your coworkers, who shared words of praise for your customer service skills.

We’ve always believed in giving our customers our undivided attention and working with them until every aspect of their transaction has been explained and understood. You achieved those goals and went above and beyond by tending to Mrs. Smith’s extra questions with patience and grace. You’ve set a noteworthy example in our office and for that, we thank you!

We’re so appreciative of your natural talents with our clientele that we’d like to use your phone call as an example of successful customer service in our training program. And of course, no good deed should go unrewarded. Please enjoy lunch on us this week at your favorite cafe with this gift card. Once again, we appreciate your outstanding representation of Acme Health Supplies Inc. and feel honored to have you on our team.

Sincerely,

Your Supervisor

That’s all there is to it! Recall the positive interaction, explain why it was great, and then show your appreciation. Whether your note is three sentences or three paragraphs long, your recognition will be appreciated.

Politically Correct Holiday Greeting Ideas

Filed under: Designing Your Business Communication — PDWriter @ 12:00 am
Politically correct holiday messages

It’s not too much of a stretch to suggest that the age-old tradition of sending greeting cards to your friends, customers, volunteers, clients, or employees can be something of a minefield. Anyone who’s hoping to spread a little holiday cheer this season may be slightly hesitant for fear of their message not being politically correct.

Not to worry, though! Here is a quick list of politically correct holiday greetings that will convey the joy and gratitude you feel without insulting anyone, regardless of race, creed, or religion. No matter what you need them for, we’ve got the perfect politically correct holiday greeting card and message for you.

Personal

  • Here’s wishing you the fondest Season’s Greetings and continued Happiness into the New Year.
  • Happy Holidays to a Big, Bright Spot in Our Lives. Wishing you all the best in the coming year!
  • Hoping your Holidays are as heartfelt and joyous as you deserve!
  • No matter where this holiday season finds you, here’s hoping you’re surrounded with love and good fortune. Happy Holidays!

To Employees

  • Thanks for all your hard work in [Year], and here’s to keeping things chugging along in [Next Year].
  • All the best to you and yours this holiday season and thanks for a wonderful year. We couldn’t have done it without you!
  • For all that you’ve done to help make our workplace a better place, we say a tremendous Thank You. We can’t wait to see what’s in store for [Year]!

To Customers

  • Season’s Greetings, Happy Holidays, and All the Best for a Prosperous New Year.
  • Thanks for your invaluable partnership in [Current Year], and best wishes for a bright and happy [Next Year].
  • Best wishes for a happy Holiday Season. We’ll see you in [next year]!

Another quick note: While you should absolutely get a set of holiday greeting cards complete with a universal message, it might also be helpful to include a personalized conclusion to each card. It doesn’t even need to be unique. You could use one of the above statements, and then write in, “To a One-of-a-Kind Soul” in each card. It takes only a little extra time and it can make a huge difference.

unique card for the holiday season

More than anything, you simply need to remember that no matter the occasion and no matter the recipient, your holiday greeting only needs to come from the heart. That might sound a little schmaltzy, but there’s no better time of year to get a little sappy and express yourself to the people who are most important to you. You’ll be happier you did, and they’ll be grateful you took the time to say so.

6 Ways to Safely Go Back to School

Back. To. School.

Most years, these words typically have mixed emotions across the board—teachers might jokingly groan, parents are excited to send kids back to class, and the kids themselves aren’t so happy. This year, back to school has more emotions than ever before.

To help teachers and schools prepare for an uncertain 2020-2021 school year we have a few ideas for you to use to keep your students, teachers, and staff safe. Plus, they’re perfect for any school— from elementary school to middle school to high school.

Stock up on Masks and other safety supplies for the 2020-2021 school year.

1. Stock up on health and safety supplies.

In addition to the typical bandages and ointments, Masks, Sanitizer, and hand wipes are must-haves for every classroom for the upcoming school year. Having these supplies in every office and classroom will go a long way toward easing teachers’ and parents’ worries. And some Masks and Sanitizer options can be customized to match your school name and/or mascot.

Anti-microbial Pens eliminate pen sharing and the transfer of germs.

2. Stock up on antimicrobial pens.

Pens are another must-have for any elementary, middle, or high school. Anti-microbial Pens eliminate pen sharing and the transfer of germs. Having these special pens around (or Anti-microbial Lanyards) is just one more way to make your school a little safer for everyone.

Post Sanitizer Stations through your school for the new school year to keep everyone safe and healthy.

3. Set up Sanitizer Stations in common areas of your school.

Sanitizing stations can be as informal or elaborate as you want. You can set up a Sanitizer Pump on a hallway table or shelf and post a sign above the sanitizer, or purchase a special Sanitizer Station. Set up Sanitizer Stations in various common areas of your school, like entrances, cafeteria, gymnasium, by locker rooms, and offices.

Welcome teachers and staff back to school with a VIP Gift Set.

4. Raise teacher morale with a Gift Set for each of them.

With all of the uncertainties teachers are facing, it’s the perfect time let them know how grateful you are for everything they do. Welcome teachers back to school with a Gift Set that is full of fun and functional gifts that will be used on a daily basis.

Use Yard Signs and Banners to give all your school teachers and staff warm welcome back.

5. Brighten up your school and grounds with Signs and Banners.

It’s more important than ever to raise everyone’s spirits and keep morale up. There’s no better way to do that than with a colorful “Welcome Back” Yard Sign, poster, decals, and Banners. Whether they are displayed on your school’s front lawn, by school entrances or sidewalks, or inside on walls, bulletin boards, doors, or windows give everybody a warm welcome.

Floor Decals encourage visitors at your school to maintain social distancing practices.

6. Post decals on walls and/or floors to encourage social distancing and hand washing.

Floor Decals are easy ways to create a one-way flow of traffic through school hallways. They are also essential for offices; they can be spaced 6′ apart to encourage visitors to maintain social distance in your school. Wall Decals are also must-have supplies. Secure a hand washing decal in every school bathroom.

In addition to the six above ideas, you can maintain a safe and healthy school environment with extra cleaning and disinfecting supplies. Use these supplies every day and try to schedule a deep cleaning once a week. No matter which ideas you choose to use in your elementary school, middle school, or high school, everyone will be a little safer for it.

9 Ways to Prepare to Come Back to Work

Having and maintaining a safe, healthy, and welcoming work environment is more important than ever before. As many businesses slowly reopen their doors, you may be wondering what you can do to ensure the safety of all your employees–and boost company morale during these times, too.

While there are many facets to reopening your business including daily health screenings, addressing mental health, et al., we will concentrate on what you can do in your physical place of business and/or building. Try one or more of the following ideas to prepare for your employees to come back to work.

Custom Bandana Masks are must-haves when your business repopens.

Stock up on plenty of Masks for all of your employees.

Even though most of your employees may have their own disposable or home-made masks, a customized Mask with your company name and/or logo is a great way to build teamwork and morale.

Make sure to have lots of Hand Sanitizer when your building reopens.

Another item on your back-to-work checklist should be Hand Sanitizer.

Stock up on sanitizer for offices, cafeterias, conference rooms, workspaces, and cubicles. Like Masks, some employees may have their own; that may help your back-to-work budget.

Use Floor Decals to create safe spaces for when your building reopens.

Establish physical distancing measures.

Keeping and maintaining physical distance during the workday is important for everyone. There are several ways you can accomplish this including staggered work shifts, lunch, and rest breaks; and rotating weeks for working onsite. Physical ideas include moving work stations and/or implementing one-way traffic patterns by using Floor Decals to direct foot traffic and or provide 6′ of distance.

Define customer and/or visitor contact rules.

No matter how many visitors, customers, or clients your business has on a daily basis, establishing some rules will help keep everyone safe and give them peace of mind. Ideas include using Floor Decals (see above), limiting the number of people in any one area (reception, waiting, etc.), no handshake greetings, and using contactless pickup.

Establish deep cleaning procedures.

It’s always good to remind employees to keep their work stations, desks, and offices clean, but deep cleaning procedures will make your workplace even safer. First use soap and water to clean surfaces, then sanitize all frequently touched surfaces with antibacterial spray or wipes, disinfect restrooms every night, vacuum every day, and encourage employees to leave personal items at home or bring as few as possible every day.

Stress the importance of continued hand washing with Glossy Wall Decals.

Post signs in the bathroom to encourage people to continue hand washing.

This is something so routine, but it’s just as important now as it was when this started. Glossy Wall Decals are must-haves for every bathroom. They can include the 20-second rule or have a simple reminder to “always wash your hands” or “suds up.”

Clear Distancing Barriers are must-haves for when your business reopens its doors.

Set up partitions between workspaces and/or use them for reception desks.

Acrylic Partitions of various sizes and shapes are available to fit any area. These products are designed for all parties involved–they keep employees safe and healthy AND your customers, clients, and visitors, too.

Welcome back employees with a 5-Piece Gift Set in honor of all their hard work and flexibility.

Welcome back your employees with a motivational Gift Set.

Gift Sets not only show employees how much you appreciate them and welcome them back to the building, but each employee will receive valuable, quality products they can use every day.

Welcome Back Yard Signs are great for when your business reopens its doors during these uncertain times.

Celebrate the big day when your doors officially open again with Signs and Banners.

Signs can range from bright and colorful outdoor Yard Signs to printed paper signs that you can post on doors, walls, and bulletin boards. Banners are always a welcome addition to any business; Banners can be as professional or whimsical as you want them to be!

Utilizing a combination of these nine tips will make your place of business much safer and welcoming when you are ready to reopen your doors. Your employees, customers, clients, vendors, and visitors will thank you for everything you’re doing to keep everyone safe.

Top 5 Ways to Say “Thanks” to Employees

Uncertain. Difficult. Challenging.

You have probably heard these words used in abundance to describe these current times, but we can think of a better one:

Thankful!

Given the current climate we are living in, it’s more important than ever to show and express your gratitude to all of your employees. We have five ideas that you can implement right away to let your employees know how much you truly appreciate them and all of their hard work–no matter if it’s onsite or at home.

Protect certificates in Thank You Certificate Jackets.

Continue to recognize milestones like tenure and Employee of the Month.

Recognition of your teachers and employees does not have to stop just because most of them are working from home or remotely. If you are holding meetings through conference calls and/or websites and programs, take the time to spotlight these special employees with a presentation. Then, mail them a “recognition package” that includes quality awards, like Certificates, Jackets, and Lapel Pins. And don’t forget to include a Greeting Card or NoteCard with handwritten words of gratitude.

Use LetterTop Certificates to thank employees, plus add a certificate or coupon.

Send a “Thank You” note to your employees and consider a gift card.

When you think of thank you notes, you may think of weddings, birthdays, or graduation parties, but they can be used for employees, too! Whether you use a NoteCard, Greeting Card, or LetterTop Certificate, this is a great way to put those appreciative thoughts to paper. You can even personalize them with a unique message for each employee. If your budget allows, you can also include a gift card (printed or plastic) as a token of thanks.

This Appreciation Gift Set is great for thanking employees and keeping morale up.

Send or give a Gift Set.

Our Direct Ship program is the perfect way to send Gift Sets to all of your teachers and employees as a show of support whether they are working from home or onsite. Gift Sets are not only budget-friendly options for you, they offer fun and functional items that everybody can use. Sending Gift Sets directly to each employee’s home lets everyone know they are still an important and valued part of your team.

Telecommute Kits are great for thanking your remote employees.

Send a Kit to help employees work from home.

Unique work-from-home kits are great ways to keep employees organized, “plugged in,” and even stress a little less. Most kits include some electronic accessories with a mix of standard desk supplies, so everyone is sure to a get a lot of use out of them. Kits are affordable ways to show your appreciation for everyone’s hard work and dedication.

NoteCards make thank you notes more personal.

Words of appreciation go a long way.

We understand you may have a tight budget to work with; sometimes a simple note of thanks goes a long way. Thank You NoteCards are always much appreciated–and if you mail them they will be attention grabbers because of their size! If you take a few minutes to write your own “thank you” message with a personal twist for each employee those notes will mean a lot more. Thank You Certificates are also a fun, motivational idea; employees can proudly display them at home. Even a simple Lapel Pin with a thank you message on it can say a lot.

We hope you can use at least one of these five ideas to say “thank you” to your employees. It’s so important right now to hear encouraging or motivational messages. No matter which idea you choose, the results will be much appreciated by your employees, teachers, volunteers, and more.

Planning the after party doesn’t have to be stressful at all when you break it down into student council picking the theme, party communications, and giveaway items.

  • The first step to start planning your party is to pick the theme. A student council committee is made to pick the theme and start planning what’s needed to create a fun party for your seniors.
  • Coordinate your party details in an elegant way with matching border papers, invites, programs, table tents, and more. Also create custom admission tickets that students can use as a keepsake.
  • An easy way to find a winner for the giveaway prizes is with tickets you can hand out as seniors walk into the party at the beginning of the night.

Ordering your coordinated stationery and giveaway items with enough time will let you focus on other aspects of the party and make everything easier in the end.

Gifts For Students

The prizes and gifts that seniors will receive is a highlight of the party. You can gift them with promotional products like tumblers, lanyards, apparel, and pens that feature your school logo and their graduating class year. Gift certificates they can use at the movies or at a restaurant make for great gifts. Your seniors can win these as prizes in a raffle or contest. For students who don’t win from a contest or raffle, gift them with goodie bags filled with promotional products.

Thank Your Sponsors

Sponsors are crucial to your party because they help with the food and gift needs. Gift your longtime sponsors with a wooden plaque or a crystal trophy they can display proudly at their office or restaurant. You can also award them on a smaller scale with a custom certificate in a certificate jacket.

There are many aspects in planning a Senior All-Night Party. Choosing the theme of the party, gifts and prizes for seniors, and acknowledging your sponsors all make for a great party. Make sure to check out PaperDirect for all your pre-party planning needs.

  • ½ cup powdered sugar
  • ¾ cup semisweet mini chocolate chips
  • Graham crackers or Nilla wafers, to serve
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, cut into small pieces

  2. With an electric mixer on medium speed, beat the cream cheese and powdered sugar for 1 minute, until smooth and fluffy.
  3. Reduce the mixer speed to low and slowly beat in the cooled butter mixture. Increase the speed to medium and beat for 1 minute. Stir in the chocolate chips.
  4. Transfer the dip to a serving bowl and refrigerate if not serving immediately. Remove from the refrigerator 15 to 30 minutes before serving. Serve with graham crackers or Nilla wafers. Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

Peppermint Bark

INGREDIENTS

  • 30 crushed peppermint hard candies, divided

  • 1 1/2 pounds white chocolate, chopped

DIRECTIONS

  1. Spread 1/3 of the peppermint candy over a 9×13-inch baking pan lined with wax paper.
  2. Melt the milk chocolate in the top of a double boiler over just-barely simmering water, stirring frequently and scraping down the sides with a rubber spatula to avoid scorching, just until melted. Pour the melted chocolate over peppermint candy in the prepared pan. Sprinkle another 1/3 of the candy on top of the milk chocolate. Refrigerate until the chocolate hardens, about 30 minutes.
  3. Melt the white chocolate in the top of a double boiler over just-barely simmering water, stirring frequently and scraping down the sides with a rubber spatula to avoid scorching. Stir in the oil-based peppermint flavoring. Pour the white chocolate over the milk chocolate, then spread the remaining 1/3 peppermint candy on top.
  4. Refrigerate until the white chocolate hardens, about 30 minutes. Cut or break into pieces to serve.

  2. Pour melted peanut butter mixture over cereal, toss to coat.

  5. Repeat process with remaining ingredients and Green Candy Melts.
  6. Store in an airtight container for up to a week.

Last Minute Tips
If you’re still thinking to yourself that you just can’t do it… keep these tips in mind.

  • Simple works best. The more you try to do, the more stressful it’s going to be. Not to mention, if things don’t quite work out the way you planned, you’re going to be even more bummed.
  • Quality over quantity.Focus on making something that’s great and people won’t mind if it’s in a limited quantity.
  • No perfection needed. If your treat doesn’t look like the picture, that’s okay. Calm your inner perfectionist and trust that it tastes delicious.
  • It doesn’t have to be themed.Don’t worry about making things green and red, or holiday themed. If the dish is delicious, it doesn’t really matter what color it is.
  • Bring your treat in a disposable container.Cleanup will be a breeze and you won’t freak out when you forget it at the office.

Enjoy these delicious treats and remember that PaperDirect has got you covered. Happy holidays!!

How to Boost Employee Morale After Layoffs

Filed under: Employee Recognition Ideas — Megan Duffy @ 11:50 am

boost employee moral after layoffs

Downsizing and restructuring is often part of business management, and ultimately, structured growth. If your company is preparing for a round of layoffs to improve the stability and positioning of your business, you need to make a conscious effort to boost employee morale after layoffs. Don’t let concerns or confusion linger among the remaining staff.

The Harvard Business Review reports that a “heightened level of employee dysfunction” is common after a downsizing situation. Thankfully, supervisors and top-level management can ease tension and fears regarding the future by implementing these ideas.

5 Ways to Boost Employee Morale after Layoffs

After the pink slips go out, and the remaining staff has been honestly informed of the purpose behind the company changes, the real work begins. Focus on career development, solidifying trust, and listening to the staff’s needs.

  1. Focus on team-building. Hiring an outside speaker to conduct a workshop or creating an internal activity can help stimulate creativity, conversation, and trust among the staff. Be sure to reward top performers with small gifts to reinforce the company’s dedication to recognizing stand-out participation and skills.
  2. Encourage open communication. Distribute information to senior staff regarding active listening skills and open-door policies they can use to encourage junior staff members to reach out with concerns during the transitional period. Employees want to feel heard and understood.
  3. Present future plans. Be candid with the staff about how their work duties will change and future hiring plans to ease their new workloads. Is an increase in tasks temporary or a new long-term expectation? Be clear about timelines and job description changes in the new office environment.
  4. Offer a support system. As your company adapts to changes, roll out helpful training courses, bring in workplace morale counselors, and schedule team meetings that empower employees to do their best. You can’t expect success from employees who feel unguided or confused about a shift in duties or new co-worker collaborations.
  5. Celebrate current value. Everyone loves to know what they’re doing right and receive praise. After a round of layoffs, a little reassurance can help stabilize trust in the company and the employees’ places in it. Take the time to thank individuals for their contributions, positive office attitudes, and adaptability to the changes.

Boost the morale at your company by keeping employee recognition gifts on hand and presenting them often. From certificates to trophies, PaperDirect offers a variety of motivational products to boost the spirit and confidence of your hard-working team.

4 Fun First Day of School Activities to Break the Ice

Filed under: Helpful Resources — Megan Duffy @ 12:24 pm

first day of school activities

The first day of school is always exciting, but it can also be a little awkward for students who have yet to get to know each other. Make the first day of school fun with a lineup of activities designed to break the ice and help elementary and junior high students get acquainted from the get-go.

The Name Game

The Name Game is an excellent way for you and your students to start learning everyone’s name. Have students sit or stand in a circle, choosing one student to go first by stating their name.

The student to the right then states their name, along with the name of the first student. The game continues, going around the entire circle, with the last person tasked with naming each student in the circle.

Make the game even more entertaining by having each student choose a description that starts with the same letter as their name, such as “Happy Henry” or “Marvelous Miranda.”

The Guess Who Game

Guessing games can be another terrific way to break the ice, such as an amusing round of The Guess Who Game. Pass out notecards to every student, and then have each student write down two fun or interesting facts about themselves without putting their names on the notecards.

Collect the notecards, shuffle them up, and then give each student a notecard. Go around the room with each student reading the facts on the card they have and other students guessing who wrote them.

Wheel of Fortune Variation

If you want to really pump up the excitement, you can set up a Wheel of Fortune game. On the first day of school, try filling the prize slot areas with different letters of the alphabet. If you have 12 prize slots, for instance, each slot could hold two or three letters to fit in all 26.

Have students take turns spinning the wheel. Students whose names begin with the letters in the prize slot where the pointer lands get to come forward and say their name and a fun description of themselves. Keep it up until all letters have come up and the entire class can name each other.

The Would You Rather Game

This game gives students a chance to ask creative questions while getting to know their classmates. Form two lines of students, with students facing each other. Students will interact with their classmate directly across from them, asking a question that involves two options.

For example, a student may ask “Would you rather go to the moon or the bottom of the ocean?” or “Would you rather have a pet monkey or a pet rhinoceros?” After several minutes, move one line down so each student gets a new partner. Repeat as desired.

In addition to first day of school activities that help students get to know each other, you can always keep a collection of motivational gifts on hand to give your students, or create motivational welcome posters for the classroom to keep students engaged and excited all year long. Visit PaperDirect for all your first-day-of-school icebreaker needs!
